Budgeting for Beginners

Budgeting is no fun. Budgeting is that thing that clues you in on when to tune out when that person who knows everything starts talking. Keeping track of every penny you spend and where you’re spending it is probably an overwhelming thought. I get it, you live off-campus and it can be easy to spend money on things like restaurants and going out. Here are two simple budgeting 101 for people who are interested in starting to budget.

  1. Track your spending for a couple of weeks. You might just see that you need to cook dinner in your student apartment tonight instead of eating out. You don’t have to get fancy with it, just take note in your phone or something of the places you frequent. Make it even easier with an app called Wally!

  1. Make a simple spreadsheet in Excel! You can easily transfer the information you’ve learned from watching your spending into categories in Excel. This will help you look at how much you’re spending and in what area.
